Discover the Wonders of Nature

On Monday, April 30 at 7:00 pm, the SouthShore Regional Library will host “Wonders of Nature” for children and families.  The program features live animals, including a flying raptor and talking parrot, and one of the largest pythons in the world.  Humor and audience participation with a dash of conservation information make this a program children and their caregivers won’t want to miss.

FCAT Test Resources for Students

Many students experience anxiety at the thought of taking a standardized test, which can result in lower scores for even the best of students.  With FCAT testing fast approaching, check out the following online resources at your Library to help battle testing terrors.

Learning Express Library offers several practice tests to help children prepare for the FCAT.  The FCAT 5th Grade Mathematics Test is based on the Florida Sunshine State Standards and offers both multiple choice and open-ended math problems.  For fourth graders, reading test practice is also available via the FCAT 4th Grade Reading Test.  Tests are available for eighth grade reading and mathematics as well.  Users will need to set up a free account with Learning Express Library in order to use the program.

The FCAT Explorer is another resource available at the Library, via the Florida Department of Education.  There you’ll find practice resources, the latest news regarding the FCAT, guides to all FCAT tests for parents and students and resources for educators.  Students need a username and password to access interactive practice programs; this information can be obtained from a child’s teacher.

Books for practicing the FCAT can also be found through the Library’s catalog.

Good luck to all students taking FCATs this  spring!

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood warns children not to talk to strangers in this favorite fairy tale. At the end of this tradional hand puppet performance, learn how characters from the story come together from foam ball to animated puppets.

The show, another imaginative production by the Creative Arts Theater, part of the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, runs through April.  For dates and times, check our events calendar.

Before you see the show, read one — or more! — of these versions of Little Red Riding Hood, available at the library.

Family Fun

Did you know that the library is a great place for the whole family to unwind and enjoy time together?  Many branches in the County hold free programs designed to help families share experiences and get the most out of their library visits.

Story programs allow parents and children to set aside 30 minutes to enjoy stories, music and fingerplays.  Little ones are encouraged to come in their jammies and bring a favorite blanket and stuffed toy!  Design and build a robot with Legos®, or explore the world of science.  Crafts more appealing?  Check out a crochet and knitting program.  Enjoy a film or music together.

To see a complete list of family programs any time, click over to the Library’s home page, select the “Events/Classes” link and select “Family Program” under “Event Categories.”

For more information about these and other FREE programs @ your library®, call (813) 273-3652 or visit www.hcplc.org.
