Hispanic Heritage Month – September 15 to October 15

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries-Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. On the 2000 Census form, people of Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “other Spanish/Hispanic/Latino.” More than 35 million people identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the 2000 Census.

Ramadan!

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims that falls on the ninth month of the lunar calendar. For the entire month of September, adults fast from sunrise to sunset in honor of Ramadan. During this special time, everyone is strongly encouraged to show extra good manners and be extra kind and generous.

Labor Day
Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. This holiday celebrates the remarkable achievements of American workers. Labor Day was first celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected for the observance of Labor Day.

2008 Summer Olympics
The XXIX Olympiad kicks off on August 8, when the Olympic torch completes its journey to light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Bejing, China . Happy Fourth of July!
Why do we have picnics, parties, parades and fireworks on the Fourth of July? Because it is America’s birthday! On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed, which is why the Fourth of July is also known as Independence Day. On this day, America declared its freedom from Great Britain and our country was born. July Fourth is a national holiday, so get into the patriotic spirit and celebrate!

Father’s Day!
Though any time is the right time to let your dad know how special he is to you, there’s no better time than the third Sunday in June—Father’s Day. First celebrated a century ago, Father’s Day was not recognized as an official holiday until President Nixon did so in 1972. And, did you know that roses are the official flower of Father’s Day? Okay, maybe your dad isn’t a flowers type of dad, but there is no doubt he’s the type of dad who will love any gift you give him. Hurricane Season
Hurricane Season will be here soon! This is a time when hurricanes normally form. This period of time changes depending on what part of the world you are in. Our hurricane season, in the Atlantic Ocean, is from June 1st to November 30th. Hurricanes are storms that form in tropical regions which are characterized by low pressure, strong winds, and heavy thunderstorms.
